The unsafe use of emollients creams can result in serious or fatal injuries from fire. You may be currently prescribed an emollient (moisturising cream) to help control itchy or scaly skin conditions e.g. eczema, psoriasis etc and prevent flare-ups. Emollients are moisturising treatments applied to the skin to soothe and hydrate it. Please keep using your emollient(s) as prescribed.
There are different types of emollients, including lotions, sprays, creams, ointments and gels. All emollients, no matter which brand or type are not flammable on their own. However, a build-up of residue on fabrics such as bedding, clothing, dressings, sofas, etc can make them more flammable. Please be careful to keep away from naked flames or heat sources such as hobs, candles and heaters. Do not smoke when using emollients. Washing items at the highest temperature recommended by the manufacturer may reduce the build-up, but not totally remove it.
Further information on reducing the risks can be accessed via the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory (MHRA) website – Skin creams alert, or SY Fire and Rescue service- Emollient creams safety advice which includes the following helpful information:
Do:
- Wash bedding and clothing frequently at the highest temperature recommended
- Cover soft furnishing and airflow cushions with throws – and wash them regularly
- Try to stop smoking – ask carers and health professionals for support with this
- Read the warnings on your product packaging and tell family and carers that you are using said products
Do not:
- Smoke or allow others to smoke near you if there is a chance your bedding or clothing could be contaminated with emollient
- Smoke in bed – ever
- Sit too close to open fires, heaters or candles
- Cook if there is a chance your clothing has been contaminated with emollient. (Wear an apron or cover that can be washed on a high temperature or wiped clean).
